Abstract

Second-hand book market, as a public space bearing market memory and culture, is an important place for urban residents to participate in and experience urban cultural life. The types of second-hand books in China's second-hand book market are related to local culture. For example, the commodities sold in Panjiayuan second-hand book market include ancient books, comic books, quotations of MAO Zedong, etc.  Panjiayuan second-hand book market sells many books related to local culture, such as periodicals of the Republic of China, comic strips and Quotations from MAO Zedong.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the crowd characteristics and spatial-temporal laws of second-hand book market from the perspective of second-hand book culture and historical development, understand the characteristics of vendors and walking behavior in a specific environment, and accurately promote specific urban space vitality and walking behavior.

Taking the market space of used books in Panjiayuan as an example, through field observation and behavior mapping, this study analyzes the spatial and temporal behavior data of used books market, including four periods of time, four age stages, gender differences and 11 kinds of behavior activities.  Behavior mapping research mainly includes four steps: pilot study, data collection, GIS database assembly and data analysis.

The results show that the age structure of second-hand book vendors is generally higher than that of pedestrians (second-hand book customers), and the female customers aged 18-36 are more than the male customers.  The research finds that the second-hand book market has special cultural connotation for different age groups: 36-54 years old male group is the main group of collecting second-hand books;  In the 18-36 age group, the female literacy rate has increased due to the popularization of basic education, and most women have the same access to books and periodicals as men.  The findings point to a link between the development of books and the experiences of people of different ages and genders.

This study details the spatial-temporal behavior of peddlery and walking related to "old books", clarifies the correlation mechanism between the sale of old books and customer behavior, and aims to put forward corresponding design ideas according to the particularity of specific space, so as to accurately promote specific urban space vitality and walking behavior.
