Abstract

In recent years, the concept of vendor-pedestrian space has been proposed in the field of urban walkability research to re-examine walking behavior through the dynamic perspective of vendors. The relevant content focuses on the open space of the street, ignoring the relatively closed space of the flea market, among which there are few studies focus on gender differences. Taking Panjiayuan as an example, this paper collects spatio-temporal data and draws behavioral maps through field research, comparing and analyzing vendor and walking behaviors of different gender groups in four sites, four time periods and four age groups, elucidating the spatio-temporal behavioral patterns with gender characteristics at the microscopic scale and exploring the causes of gender behavioral differences. These findings indicate that in flea market, the gender proportions of vendors selling the same types of goods in different environments differ; women's walking behavior tends to be younger; and gender differences are more significant on weekends than weekdays. This study explores the gender spatio-temporal behavioral differences in flea market and explores the influencing mechanisms based on three aspects: spatial environment, physiology and psychology, and social division of labor, which provides gender spatio-temporal data support for the design of specific walking spaces in China to improve the gender inclusiveness and humanization of spaces.
